Technology has been evolving over the years. Gadgets have evolved from large, simple ones to smaller and more complex. Technology has greatly impacted all aspects of life. The education sector has not been left behind. What technology can change the world of education for school students in classrooms around the word; for one new quicker interactive way of teaching & learning.
Student learning enhanced by technology change
Technology has ushered essential changes that have brought significant changes in the world of education. Classroom teachers use the most common resources in school have been books, notepads, pens, and chalks among others.
However, with advancement in technology, students in some learning institutions nowadays have mostly done away with these traditional resources and have embraced smartphones, laptops and tablets among others as learning materials.
Digital learning has also been adopted in many learning institutions, especially universities.
There are different kinds of technology that can be used to change the education systems around the world:
Students education through technology
Adaptive Computer Based Testing
Here, normal assessment tests are replaced by computer adaptive tests that are intended to regulate their level of difficulty based on the responses provided.
These tests are able to match the knowledge and ability of the student. For example, if a student gives an incorrect answer, the computer then provides an easier question. If the student gets the correct answer, the subsequent question that will be provided by the computer will be a difficult one.
Computer-adaptive tests are geared towards the capacity to determine the abilities of students more accurately, while at the same time steering clear of the issues associated with normal tests.
A simulation is a method of practice and learning that can be utilized in many different aspects of education. It is often used to replace and intensify real experiences with guided ones that bring into mind considerable aspects of the actual world in an interactive manner.
In most areas, these simulations have already begun to replace the traditional, direct instructions.
Learning simulations in the education sector can be effective in developing skills and knowledge. In addition to this, teamwork training during simulations provides added benefits to the traditional method of instruction.
Intelligent massive open online courses (MOOCs)
These are online courses that are geared towards unrestricted participation and open access through the internet.
They offer courses that are at par with courses offered in universities without necessarily completing a whole set of units or a set programme of studies. They have become prevalent because of the following reasons;
- They are mostly centered on the use of videos. This, in turn, offers interaction through group collaborations or programmed responses through online evaluations.
- With MOOCs, there are no entry requirements (unlike the normal tertiary institutions).
- They are suitable for independent study and users can choose courses from whichever institution that offers them.
- MOOCs allow many students to study online courses that are of a higher quality with prominent universities.
Game – Based learning
This type of learning was devised to balance subject matter with gameplay. With this approach, students delve into significant aspects of games in a learning situation designed by their respective instructors.
Inside a game-based learning environment, students plus their teachers get to work together toward a set objective, while at the same time selecting actions and experiencing their consequences.
Features of this approach include:
- A fantasy aspect that engages students in a learning exercise through a given storyline.
- The use of competitive activities. This can be achieved through students competing with fellow students or students challenging themselves so as to be motivated.
- Teachers should ensure that the learning process is fundamental to scoring and winning.
To incorporate learning and game-play;
- The respective teachers should settle on rewards for the winners beforehand.
- The game should be tested before it is run.
- Game pieces should be created.
Open source learning in a school classroom
This approach enables students to utilize the internet effectively to craft and manage their own learning experiences and create suitable material that everyone can access online.
Students work with a teacher to come up with ideas, search for materials and conduct various research exercises to cultivate their own experiences via the internet. Online interactive tools used in open source learning include blogs and social media platforms.
Cloud computing can be termed as the conveyance of computing resources (ranging from apps to data centers) over the internet. It is mostly on pay-for-use terms. It is the delivery of shared computer resources/services on demand.
Present day and also future education systems can benefit from cloud computing in the following ways:
- Mobile phone apps like iCloud and SugarSync provide access to digital resources.
- You can access all your data at all times from the cloud. Assignments, notes, and various projects can be accessed by students from different locations.
Also referred to as HUD, this technology involves a transparent display that offers information without the need to look away from the normal position. This technology is mostly common with fighter jets. With regards to education, it will provide students with information, test results, and social data immediately.
Blended learning in schools
Blended learning basically involves integrating both the regular classroom learning in school with online learning (e-learning) and digital media. This creates a lot of interest in students, thus they end up retaining considerably more.
The above information shows what kind of technology can be integrated into the education sector so as to entirely transform the way we learn.
