Counting seconds or hours in a week or day may seems trivial to most people, although if a business is operating a machine that packs a number of items per second or hour each year it make a significant difference, as with amount of seconds in a year.
The standard unit measurement of time is “Second” in this case. One second is 1/60 of a minute or 1/3600 of an hour.
Calculation how many actual seconds are in one day first work out the seconds in units of time in one day; Second in one minute & second in one hour, number of hours a day.
Units of time in a day:
60 Seconds in a minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
Seconds to days formula: Seconds in a minute x minutes per hour x hours per day
1 day = 24 hours into second’s conversion
Seconds in hour formula: Multiply number of second’s minute x number of minute per hour: Seconds 60 x 60 minutes = 3600 seconds in hour.
Now Multiply number hours per day x seconds an hour.
Hours 24 x 3600 seconds in hour = 86,400 seconds in a day or 24 hours.
Alternative calculation number of seconds in day
60 Seconds in a minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
Minutes in a day formula: Multiply number hours a day x minutes in hour
Hours 24 x 60 minutes = 1440 minutes in a day.
Now multiply minutes in a day x seconds in a minute: Minutes 1440 x 60 seconds = 86,440 seconds in a day. (Calendar Year)
or
Full formula:
24 hours day x 60 minutes hour x 60 seconds minutes = 86,400 seconds in a day. (Calendar Year)
Practice question

A teacher in the UK requires being at school from 08.30 to 15.30 each school day.
How many seconds does the teacher spend at the school in one day?
Answer
First work out the total number of hours at school = 7 hours.
There’s 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes = 1 hour, 24 hours = 1 day
Work out seconds in one hour: Formula: Multiply seconds in a minute x minutes in one hour
60 x 60 = 3,600 seconds in 1 hour
Now multiply seconds per hour x hours in school
3,600 x 7 = 25,200 seconds in school per day
