About the Role

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Assistant Headteacher from September 2019, who has a track record of outstanding classroom practice and the ability to lead improvement in academic standards and student outcomes.


As a member of SLT, the Assistant Headteacher will play an important role in the overall leadership and management of the school. In particular, you will work closely with the Head of Secondary to lead and develop outstanding teaching and learning across the school.


Duties and responsibilities will include:
 A part time teaching commitment
 Accelerating levels of progress in the core subjects in your phase so aiming for a SEF 1.2 of very good or above
 Monitoring student progress in partnership with Curriculum leaders/Heads of Department in line with assessment and recording policy across your agreed phase
 Using comparative data and prior attainment data to set targets with Year leaders (YL)/Heads of Department/Curriculum leaders. Be able to use National Agenda Parameter data (CAT4, GL assessments, IBT ( Arabic)) to inform best practice


 Working with through-school and through-phase student groups as required as part of your strategic duties as directed by the Head of Primary or Secondary
 Working as partners in leadership with members of the Executive team to ensure there is a shared vision for the further development of your phase and strategic area
 Ensuring you are up to date with recent research within your phase of expertise and with UK/MoE education expectations and examination board requirements. You will need to know both UK and MoE curriculum compliance


 Holding Curriculum/Year Leaders accountable for standards and the daily high expectations required of all teachers (marking, planning, lesson delivery). To work with YL/Curriculum leaders to support and challenge colleagues if these standards are not met
 Monitoring standards and progress within your phase group using a range of appropriate tools (work sampling, drop –ins, lesson observations, pupil discussion, displays, professional discussions)
 Maintaining your professional development portfolio relating to the GEMS leadership standards
 Being proactive in all dealings with parents to ensure whole school strategic messages about teaching, learning and curriculum are delivered


Please note, as a Senior Leader you will be expected to attend the majority of whole school evening/weekend events during the year as part of the Senior Leadership Team. It is your responsibility to monitor the school calendars and make necessary arrangements.


The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a forward thinking staff and school leadership team who ensure that the academic and social development of every student is at the heart of what they do.


Applicants should have:
 Current experience (last 2 years) of whole school or phase leadership (core curriculum Head of Department, Teaching and Learning (T&L), Whole Key Stage leadership)
 The ability to demonstrate proven strategies for raising whole subject/department/phase progress and attainment in the last 3 years
 A demonstrable understanding of teaching to a wide range of ability including EAL, SEN and Gifted and talented
 Experience of policy development and implementation
 The ability to work with and through others to raise standards
 Coaching/mentoring experience to improve teaching and learning outcomes and lesson grading within last 3 years
 Experience of accurate Self Evaluation of a core subject/department/phase


 Successful implementation of T&L strategies across a whole school
 An up-to-date knowledge of developments in T&L, curriculum, UK and UAE compliance, SATs, UAE Ministry of Education, GCSE and A level developments, experience of other pathways e.g. BTEC,Asdan, IB (as appropriate for phase position)
 The ability to use data and evidence to inform all judgements
 An understanding of equal opportunities within school
 The proven ability to form positive and professional relationships with colleagues in challenging circumstances along with parents and pupils
 Ability to support and challenge; holding others to account if required
 Proven ability to coach/mentor others to improve performance

About the School

GEMS Al Barsha National School for Boys (NSB), Dubai, opened in September 2017 with the aim of providing an outstanding level of education for mainly local Emirati boys.
