Watching you’re child walk out the door in the morning on they’re way to school parents hope and expect they have a happy fulfilling experience during the school day.
US private schools can be a safer learning environment than public schools as they have selective admission process to reject possible trouble makers, although public schools require accepting all students.
Admission of elementary & high school children
Private boarding & day schools have a selective admission process where they can reject a troublesome child as they don’t accepting all children (Pick & choose), unlike public schools that need to accept all students.
Private education schools do there utmost to avert any potential issues a child may have if accepted to the school by screening each potential student, and if they think a child is not suitable they don’t accept them.
Should a child start causing trouble, or get into a fight an independent school can more easily expel or kick a student out for breaking rules where publics schools in USA it’s fairly difficult to expel a child.
Student socio economic background
Vast majority of students who attend private school are from financial stable families contributing to emotional & mental health stabilities in a student.
Compare this to inner city US schools students that can come from households with money issues that could lead to angry students who go onto bully or lashing out physically violence towards students & teachers.
Private vs public school student
All my time teaching at a private school there was no fights, only verbal disagreements possibly by not accepting a child with anger or emotional troubles that caused issues at a previous school.
In contract the inner city public schools I taught at was a few fights each year between students, and the occasional assaulting of a teacher or staff member at school.
Public elementary & high schools accept all children that live locally where they come from different socio economic backgrounds from middle class to families under pressure daily.
Security on US school campus
Student safety is the top priority of US public and private day & boarding schools where each individual school implements & updates a full safety plan for students and staff.
An US independent school has less easily public accessible points as the school campus has be designed to deter unwanted visitors, compared to many public schools in states around America.
The independent school I taught at had better 24 hour security personnel checking all students, staff & teachers through the entrance gate, although there was no security & easy access at my previous public schools.
US safer independent schools are:
- Lock the gates when school begins until the end of day.
- Restriction of school visitors requiring them to sign in/out and chaperoned at all times.
- Parents picking up a student are not allowed on school campus.
- Digital smart card access use for students & staff members.
- Operation of school security cameras with 24 hours surveillance.
- Installation of metal detectors at high risk schools or where children of diplomats attend.
- Front security desk where all outside visitors must go before entering the school grounds.
Health & safety procedures & guidelines are very similar for both USA private and public schools.
All US private and public schools must adhere to state & local government regulations on school safety for students and teachers giving similar practices.
The result is the operation of efficient safety practices schools have adopted to mitigate physical violence & conflict between students.
When boarding students living at school are going off the school campus traveling to the local shops permission is first granted by parents, then the student signs out and is only allowed out locally to be back at a certain time.
Student rules & code of conduct
Private & public schools in America equally have strict rules for students to follow and a school code of conduct they agree to become a student.
House parents, teacher’s & staff members get to know students more at private school compared to US state education students and can more recognize when a student is likely to start causing trouble.
Teachers today are dealing with some discipline issues in some US public schools by a small minority of persistent repeat offending students that stretch or break school rules.
School discipline can be dealt with more permanently at an independent school than public education as they can more easily & quickly expel a student that is disruptive, such as bulling or intimidation.
Quality of teaching & learning student experience
A better overall learning experience is received by independent school students in general than public school in United States. They mainly gave more funds, better facilities; smaller class sizes and teachers are more personally & actively involved with students where they can spot & avert potential issues by noticing a change in student behavior.
Private schools in US also tend to have less teacher shortage and they stay longer at one school which helps with continuity of teaching & learning, resulting in teachers building up a long term rapport with students.
With a shortage of teacher’s you sometimes get a class teacher not specialist in the subject at public school that could result in inadequate teaching methods leading to disruptive student behavior in class.
School student & teacher interaction with each other
Students are more involved academically in lessons & through social experiences during or after school curricula activities at private education k 12 schools than at public elementary or high school.
Children get to know each other through interaction that tends to help with mutual respect & tolerance of each other helping to quashing any potential conflict at a fee paying school.
Teacher & staff get to know students more personally at independent schools as opposed to public state school, through:
- Small class sizes.
- More school trips.
- Participating in extra curricula activities.
- Performing in concerts & prayer together.
Private schools teachers and other school staff are heavily involved with students on school social trips, games and boarding life 24 hours a day compared to public school.
Parents are much more involved with private school education asking more questions, progress reports and communication more often with the school & teachers face to face or by telephone, if issues arise with they’re child.
Up to date school facilities & pleasant surroundings
Schools that have created a school campus with well maintained buildings & pleasant surroundings along with a friendly atmosphere for staff and students coming to school each day helps to create a safer school.
Facilities and resources are generally more plentiful in private education compared to state public education sector as fee paying schools tend to have larger budgets available.
