A country split between 8 state territories teaching in Australia provides a choice of approximately 10,000 schools with millions of students.  Most students attend state school, although there are fee paying schools around Australia.  From nursery, primary, secondary, college and university level all competent qualified teachers from the UK have a chance teaching in Australia.

 

Can I get a Visa?

Obtaining a skilled migrants visa for qualified lecturers and teachers for teaching in Australia is possible should you qualify.

 

Qualifications Required

Each of 8states has their own teacher employment and teacher certification policies and guidelines for schools.  Qualified to teach in the UK at school or college level and have a working visa then you have a good chance of obtaining a teaching position.

Registration Authorities

Before you can teach in state schools in the following states your require to register as a teacher, although obtaining a teacher position is not assured.

Queensland: Board of Teacher Registration
South Australia: Teachers' Registration Board
Victoria: For non government schools only Registered Schools Board

 


Teacher Certification

As a teacher from the UK with overseas qualifications and experience you will require your certificates and experience checked, and this is completed by individual states.

 

Western Australia: Overseas Qualifications Unit

Tasmania: Overseas Qualifications Unit

Northern Territory: Office of Ethnic Affairs

Australian Capital Territory: National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition

New South Wales: Overseas Qualifications Officer

Queensland: Skills Recognition Branch

Victoria: Overseas Qualifications Unit

South Australia: Immigration Promotion and Settlement Unit

Teaching in Australia can also be challenging and rewarding from a school in a city or a small school in a rural area.  They’re opportunities to do supply teaching or you can accept a full time permanent teaching position.
